What's coming up

Tuesday 24th November SCAN and Swindon Film Society present a showing of the film 'The Yes Men Fix the World' at The Victoria, Victoria Road, Old Town at 7.45pm.

It has been described as funny and satirical with a broadly environmental theme and the blurb says “a screwball story that follows a couple of gonzo political activists as they infiltrate the world of big business and pull off a couple of pranks that expose how corporate greed is destroying the planet”.

There is a trailer on their distributor’s website: www.dogwoof.com

Admission free, with retiring collection.

Saturday 5th December 2009:  March in London ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Coach transport will be available from Swindon (and possibly around the area). Please contact Viv on viv@swindonclimate.org.uk or 01793 871513 to register your interest. More information.

Some people may be a little reluctant to join a 'demo'...here is a report from a SCAN supporter about what it means to show your concern for the world's biggest problem:

I went 2 years ago.  The march met outside the US Embassy on a huge grassy square and listened to a load of top-notch speakers.  Then we marched slowly along the streets of the very posh end of London, observing the practical city vehicles (Land Rovers, Mercs, etc) parked alongside those exempt from congestion charging (G-Whizz & Prius)...  I chatted to quite a few strangers also on the march, all of whom were not the 'sort of people' you would expect on a demo.
Eventually we arrived at a packed Trafalgar Square where there was a big stage, bands played, more speakers, etc, before dispersing for home.
The coach was parked in Park Lane, not far from the US Embassy, but a bit of a trek back.  An excellent and inspiring day and the sun shone!  (Last year it poured, but I wasn't there!)

All the time we were perfectly safe as there were loads of police keeping close watch, videoing and helicopter buzzing overhead.  I certainly saw no trouble and it all seemed good natured and friendly, especially it was such a huge crowd, all shapes & sizes, colours & creeds, young & old...an amazing day out!
